TRAVEL
* FLIGHTS at £150 per head; this is based on Croatia Airlines prices.
* £1,400: a car. this is pretty important, this will get us a pretty decent people carrier (read: 1998 ford galaxy, 1.9l, diesel, manual)
* CAR HIRE at £150 per head; this is based on Ben's research suggesting that a car can be got for €1000 which fits our criteria.
* £470: tax and insurance for the above. tax for 6 months on a car of the expected co2 emissions of an aging people carrier (6 months being the shortest bracket one can purchase) costs £120. assuming certain guesses about some of the drivers (smith, ed, phil) we can acquire insurance. it is cheaper to insure for the year and then cancel. this can be achieved for c. £600 float + c. £100 green card (croatia, bosnia, serbia) - £400 cancellation (allowing for minimum premia) + £50 cancellation fee, summing to the above
* FUEL at £65 per head; this is based on a distance of 2,500 miles, an efficiency of 40mpg (I cannot assume better, given a 6-dude van, often country roads and so forth) and cost of £1.30 per litre
* £500: fuel. this assumes 45mpg diesel at serbian petrol costs as at the new year; we can probably manage up to 50 mpg if we have an economic driver, and get it cheaper on the massive getting-out-there stretch, but time considerations and the bit where petrol prices may go up (especially in the balkans) and the bit where we might want to make diversions mean i don't care to assume any lesser cost.
* ACCOMMODATION at £225 per head; hostelries appear to be able to cater for us at c. €12 to €20 per night, which we can take to be £15. This will last 15 nights.
* £50: toll roads. there are quite a lot, through france/belgium, germany, croatia and bosnia at least, and perhaps more. i will allow £50 for this.
* FOOD AND DRINK at £320 per head; let us assume we are pretty frugal but still we are tourists, and that we subsist on £20 per day. This will last 16 days.
* £150: channel tunnel. it's £73 each way at peak times, which given the times we'll be doing it probably will be (unless we leave the starting point (which i am currently treating as ben's house) at c. 2200hrs, in which case it will be all of £15 less); if we are sensible we will have no choice but not to push it on the return. hence, £150.
* ATTRACTIONS AND OTHER SUCH BSNS at an arbitrary allowance of £120 per head.
this totals £2,570, or (assuming the six (6) canon attendees) £430 per person.

FOODSTUFFS AND DRINKING WATER
TOTAL: £1,030 per head?
* £15 per person per day maybe? (this is based on costs in europe and the balkans being fractionally less than those here, but that we will not be eating in the most economic manner due to not living out of a supermarket (for one thing, we won't have a big fridge.) if anyone cares to revise this estimate, go right ahead
this totals £240 per person.

ACCOMMODATION
* how do we intend to do this? i have little idea. i will arbitrarily assume that for £15 per person any given town can put a group of five or six up for a night; this is based on www.hihostels.com information and assumes that we are going to do it by youth hostels &c. (the cheapest way)
this also totals £240 per person.

OTHER STUFF
* we will want to go in to attractions, museums and so forth maybe? let us assume that for the whole trip this totals £100 per person (based, again, on almost zero data).
this totals (pretty arbitrarily) £100 per person.

RESALE
* all this may be modified by what we choose to do with the car afterwards; if we assume a resale value of £900 (based on autotrader) then we get a bit of a refund.
this re-profits us £150 each

TOTAL

the total FLOAT (not cost) required for these things, including paying insurance up front and not selling the car before the jaunt(e), sums to £1,075 PER PERSON

the total cost of these things after reclaiming some insurance and selling the car sums to £860

are we okay with that

HERE ARE THINGS which the financial-obsessive and/or cautious members of this guild have calculated will contribute to the cost

  • FLIGHTS at £150 per head; this is based on Croatia Airlines prices.
  • CAR HIRE at £150 per head; this is based on Ben's research suggesting that a car can be got for €1000 which fits our criteria.
  • FUEL at £65 per head; this is based on a distance of 2,500 miles, an efficiency of 40mpg (I cannot assume better, given a 6-dude van, often country roads and so forth) and cost of £1.30 per litre
  • ACCOMMODATION at £225 per head; hostelries appear to be able to cater for us at c. €12 to €20 per night, which we can take to be £15. This will last 15 nights.
  • FOOD AND DRINK at £320 per head; let us assume we are pretty frugal but still we are tourists, and that we subsist on £20 per day. This will last 16 days.
  • ATTRACTIONS AND OTHER SUCH BSNS at an arbitrary allowance of £120 per head.

TOTAL: £1,030 per head?
